Overview
Families Preparing the New Generation (FPNG) is an evidence-based, culturally responsive parenting program offered in English and Spanish. Over the course of eight interactive workshops, parents and caregivers learn how to strengthen family communication, explore cultural values and parenting practices, better understand adolescent development, set healthy boundaries, support positive decision-making, and talk with teens about substance use and other risky behaviors.
Rooted in an ecodevelopmental approach, FPNG is designed to strengthen family functioning and prevent adolescent substance use, particularly among families navigating shifting cultural environments. This program empowers families to cultivate prosocial environments that support holistic youth development and resilience. Originally developed by and for Mexican-heritage families, FPNG is highly adaptable and has been successfully modified for other communities, including Burmese refugee communities and urban American Indian families.
