A: keepin’ it REAL includes 10 lessons, typically delivered over 10 weeks. Mantente REAL includes 12 lessons, typically delivered over 12 weeks. Each lesson usually takes about 45-60 minutes, depending on class size and discussion time.
If needed, each lesson can be split into two shorter sessions. Programs may also choose to facilitate more than one lesson per week, but delivering lessons too quickly is not recommended because students need time to practice and reflect on the skills.
Mantente REAL (MREAL) is the culturally adapted version of keepin' it REAL developed for Mexico and other Spanish-speaking contexts. It maintains the evidence-based core of kiR while addressing cultural factors such as violence, intimidation, gender dynamics, and local social norms. keepin’ it REAL is typically organized as 10 lessons, whereas Mantente REAL is typically organized as 12 lessons.
A: keepin’ it REAL and Mantente REAL are designed to be facilitated during the school day by classroom teachers. They are universal prevention programs, meaning they are intended for all students in the classroom, regardless of individual level of risk.
Although the programs can be adapted for other settings, implementation during the school day helps ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate. After-school or out-of-school implementation may limit participation because not all students are able or likely to attend.
A: Research on keepin’ it REAL has shown that classroom teachers are ideal facilitators. Teachers already know their students, understand classroom dynamics, and have experience guiding learning, discussion, and skill practice. They can also provide continuity by reinforcing REAL strategies across other subjects and classroom situations.
Although teachers are the preferred facilitators, keepin’ it REAL and Mantente REAL have also been implemented outside the classroom by other trained facilitators, including social workers, nurses, counselors, and community leaders.
